Heritage

A scrumptious family tradition of ours is to have pork roast, sauerkraut and dumplings for a holiday meal. It stinks the house up, but once we sit down and inhale, our taste buds help us forget the smell. Obviously sauerkraut is a food you love or hate. And now on our second helping of leftovers, we've probably stunk up the neighborhood!

During dinner tonight, I had one of those priceless conversations with my boys.

It was about heritage.

It stemmed from the tradition of making this meal. How my mom did it, my grandma did it, etc. and how these sort of traditions have been handed down for generations. The topic turned to how we are similar and unique. I got such a kick out of how AJ brightened up while he started listing the ways he and I are alike.

He listed how we both have "big eyes". How we both like to have long hair (his hint to wanting to grow his hair out again) and D-Man gleefully chimed in on how we both go to the bathroom a lot. (We won't expand on that one!)

It was fun to listen to my boys compare themselves to their parents and how they have the same traits. As a mom I've been watching these similarities for years. I've enjoyed a front seat view of my cutie patooties growing into their own little sweet self and yet still do things that remind me of me or my husband.

I looked at my sweet boys tonight with such a full heart. My thoughts are already on the teary side from watching them the past 2 days. So full of love and laughter and excitement. So happy to be a part of our family.

I hope that one day they can look back at their own hertige and not just see the sauerkraut and dumplings, but to be able to tell their own children how much their parents loved God and tried to be like Him!

What a beautiful new layout, Linda. A special post too - I really need to devote some time to researching more of our own family lineage.....

Moments like these are soooo special! :) Sorry to hear about your ankle. Is it feeling better? I love your dog. He is to cute! I don't blame him for eating the sweets. I would have done the same. :)

Precios moments! Thank you for this post. Also...our new years tradition is P&S only with Mashed potatoes and no dumplings

I love Love LOVE your new look my friend!

I can't say I'd join in on the sauerkraut meal, but I can certainly appreciate the tradition. Passing something down like that, generation to generation is Precious.

The conversation with your son? Priceless.

Blessings, Carolynn

I love your new layout, right down to the snowy bench! What a sweet post. My kids who are all grown, still find things in each other that remind them of us and often tease each other about it!

Your blog rocks! I love the new look too! I love this post.

I'm not sharing this to say "look at me! Look at me!" But I'm sharing it because I don't think we had "met" when it was posted on the EO, and it's based on the ideas you've written about here. So anyway, I'm too lazy to put the link up. But if you have time sometime, a post called Remember is under the "greatest hits" tab on my blog. I always feel weird sharing posts--I'm truly not trying to toot my horn, I just sense that kindred spirit thing in our two posts :)

Look at the new look! It's simple chic. Kinda like sauerkraut and dumplings. Which by the way sound yummy to me. I'm german. You? Not the bad ones though. (Although, there is wonder on that...I choose not to dig. Don't want to know)
Today, as I read my post I cried. I put the thing together weeks ago, edited it like a dozen times. Then this morning I added the song. Oh, poo I got all weepy...then I prance ove here...
Yep, watching them grow and become little people, it is the MOST special gift. I wish I could have heard that conversation...Kids really do say amazing things.

Oh boy, I have so much to say since I took a little break!

First, I LOVE your new look! :D

Second, I'm so sorry that you twisted your ankle. But your story was pretty funny.. hee-hee!

And your dog story CRACKS me up! I can just picture him scarfing down those num-nums...LOL!

Lastly (for now) I am SO shocked that you are all the way on the other side of the country with a pork/sauerkraut tradition! We have that for our New Years dinner every year, but it's a Pennsylvania dutch thing (we are from PA)...so COOL!

I've been missing you, friend! I sure hate it when I get back-logged like this... :(

Oh Linda, Linda. This Linda loves your new look, too, especially the bench. The pooch post cracked me up, and the last one made me miss my once-little ones. I thought I was already following you, but I guess I wasn't, but I am now.
