I should dedicate this post to my sister. For she is the one that has influenced...misery...er uh "happiness" in the atmosphere of my car. They play this little game in their family called "slug bug". I'm sure you've heard of it. It's an old game people play on road trips, right? Well in my family it has gotten way outta hand.
I remember when you saw a VW bug, you said "slug bug" and then if you were the first to say it, you got to slug the loser in the arm. THANKFULLY my boys don't know that extent of the game and I have NO plans on telling them.
Slug bug has gotten out of hand simply because it causes havoc in my driving, near miss wrecks, cramped necks and the mother of this family to go insane from the testosterone of competition. Tears have been shed over this one people and its has been because of losing. I can't stand it any longer.
While driving thru town the other day and trying to have a conversation with my husband (who was driving), there were several outbursts of "slug bug" at loud decibels. Then a proclamation of the total winning points of the gloater. The worse part is that my husband is just as much a part of the competition as the rest of my crew. I am afraid for our safety dear friends. Not to mention the deterioration of communication in my marriage!
This morning on a trip to the nearby library, I heard someone in the back seat yell "slug bug" followed by a sigh. "Oh yea, papa said we can't play slug bug with mama in the car". Of course, AGAIN, mama is the bad guy. What's up with that? I'm up for a little competition. Or maybe I just don't like losing. But it made me feel like a party pooper. I suppose I can take it though. The rides are much quieter and less stressful now. And I am so confused on the rules that have been stretched beyond what's right in adding other cars:
Newer model slug bug....1 point
Old Slug bug.....2 points
VW van (double slug bug).....3 points
Corvettes.....5 points
Mini-cooper....1 point
Lotus Elise.....10 points (there are exactly 3 of them in this city, one belongs to a member of our church so you can imagine the searching in panic when we arrive in the parking lot on any given Sunday morning)
OH where will this end...?
And what does the winner win in all this hoopla. Nuthin'. Ahh, but for a guy, its that ol' glory and pride of having the most points.
Me? I'm thinking about playing my own game, by myself, I'd win all the time. Hmm, what should my game be?.....

That is a game I'm most happy NOT to teach my kids. I'd get hit all the time. when we were kids, it was the leg - and typically a slap.
I think my mom called a halt to the game when my brothers got really big -- and painful.
You could play the "how many times are they going to play that song on the radio" game? One day I heard the same song 3 or 4 times.
You could play the license plate game. Where you collect all the plates from other states. I almost started one day when I saw a plate from Hawaii. What a way to start the game -- with the hardest plate to find.
or you could play the quiet game. That's my favorite -- next to the listening to MY music game.
:-)
I SO relate to you. The kids would always get in fights with this game - always in dealing with the technicalities (I called that one, no you didn't - you didn't say what the color was.....) ENOUGH ALREADY!
Lately, they've started playing the alphabet game trying to find the letters in signs or license plates, which hasn't started a fight yet. However, I'm not above just suggesting Brayden brings his DS in the car. Even worship music can be a problem as Mikayla likes to sing and use hand motions and that BUGS Brayden..... kids, kids, kids!!!!
Well, maybe this is better than, "are we there yet mom?!?" ...said with maximum whining.
Sounds familiar - I got to slug my son two times just on the way home from the store the other day! I am curious if your kids taught my kids, or the other way around, as our game also includes a very complex points system including any Porshe, Audi, Mustange GT or Lotus Elise (the yellow one has been parked at my work lately and my son confirmed as well that there are only three in town!). Too bad we aren't one of the owners!
I think you should just crank up the radio and drown out the noise!! HAHAHA!!!! Before long the boys will be back at school and I bet you will say slug bug to yourself every time you see one...heeheehee...sorry just had to say it! Hang in there
